Dave okays Italian translations of Cerebus

So I can finally tell y’all. Dave has agreed to an Italian translation of Cerebus. Via the google translation of the notice:

Black Velvet has announced on its website that will publish the Italian edition of Cerebus by Dave Sim, a number that readers expect Italians for decades. The first volume for publication in Italy are entitled High Society and will contain the numbers from 26 to 50 of the original series.

The official website for the Black Velvet press release is here: http://www.blackvelveteditrice.com/spip.php?article241

Omar Martini of Black Velvet Editrice states:

" And even the news on Cerebus is decidedly true! It's something that was
announced last Thursday and we had kept it secret so as to obtain the biggest
possible effect... and it seems that it has worked!

"I well know that we will have attentive observers on how we work and on the type
of edition we release... but we will try to give our all! "Cerebus" is a series
that I truly consider to be amongst the most important in the world, it is for
me truly an honour to be given the possibility to publish it here in Italy. We
are doing our very best on it and I hope that it will be appreciated. We are
working on the translation (I have just received the ninth and tenth episodes
from the "High Society" volume) and I am about to receive the font that I have
had made so as to "repeat" Sim's calligraphy.

"Further, what we want to do, is to periodically give, a look into the world of
Cerebus. At present we have started on the first of five episodes in which we
will recap the first volume, due to the fact that we are starting from the
second phonebook... later I will see what to insert so as to always keep
people's attention focused. The book will be published in Autumn... a
hypothetical date could be end of October (the idea could be to have it for the
Lucca Comics & Games event)... but in the worst case that we cannot achieve that
(we are in three editors working on this at the same time), it should still be
released in November... in time for Christmas!"

Later:

"Yes, William, it is without a doubt a project in which we really believe... and
on which we will dedicate ourselves body and soul...

"Sure you can translate my replies to the yahoo group, but keep in mind the
following information (that partially answers your further questions):

"To say the truth I had already modified that phrase into "America" because
Margaret had (rightly) informed me that I had wrongly written that it was the
longest series in the "United States". To be honest, to say in Italian that it
is "the longest series created in Canada" would sound a bit strange... therefore
I thought to use the more generic "America" so as to maintain the territorial
correctness, but also to remember that the series was produced in Canada, but
was also widely distributed into the United States. Do you think that's wrong?

"We are now facing up to the various difficulties, above all of a linguistic
nature. I had not yet considered Duke Leonardi... but on that matter I will have
the assistance of an artist friend of mine, married to an Italo-American girl,
who would well know the type of slang that immigrants would use. I think that
his judgment on the matter will be a precious asset.

"Regarding the dividing in five parts (of the first Cerebus phonebook), there
was a misunderstanding... ;-) we will be putting these recaps up on our website.
You can already find the first part with text, covers and relative audio files.
We will continue to do so every 10-15 days. In the future, it is my intention to
recuperate the first volume. The Phonebooks will have the same contents as the
originals, the only difference will be in the format (like "Strangehaven"), the
spines and perhaps a slightly different graphic (we are still working on it).

"No, the sample pages on the website are not definitive. There, we used
Astrocity (the font that Dave Sim uses currently on his new works) because the
"Mega" catalogue had asked us for a preview of four pages. Now that we have the
[Dave Sim calligraphy] font, we can update the website with the "definitive"
pages... Regarding the different types of fonts, I have already made a quick
analysis (I will shortly be doing it more thoroughly). I saw that "High
Society", in comparison to the later books, seems "more simple" (but this we
will discover as we proceed facing up to each hurdle as it comes!). We have had
three fonts made specially (a normal one, a "shouted" one and one that recalls
the onomatopoeia of Eisner), while for the others we will find other existing
fonts. We will make manual adaptations, while for some things Sim has made
himself available to be of help. We will not abuse that, but objectively there
are certain panels that, without his help, we will not be able to do...

"On the most "important" question [I had asked how the collaboration to publish
Cerebus in Italian had began], to say the truth I don't really know... the head
of the co-edition is the Spanish Editor company Ponent Mon (the French Editor
company is on the other hand called Vertige Graphics) it was they [Ponent Mon]
who contacted Sim. If I'm not wrong or didn't misunderstand, Ponent Mon should
also be doing "Judenhass"... so therefore I think that maybe he could have
proposed a general contract.

"Well, that's all for the moment... I will keep you informed, so that also the
other fans on the yahoo group can be updated on how things are progressing...
and then I want to check something... but on that I don't want to get ahead of
myself too much because I will first need to see if what I'm thinking of is
possible..."

(Special thanks to William Beach for the contact and translation efforts)

LitGraphic: The World of the Graphic Novel

November 10, 2007 through May 31, 2008

A burgeoning art form with roots planted firmly in history, graphic novels, or long-form comic books, have begun to gain the interest of the literary establishment. But for many of today's younger readers, graphic novels, with their antiheroes and visual appeal to the image literate, are positioned to usurp the role that the novel once played. Focused on subjects as diverse as the nature of relationships, the perils of war, and the meaning of life, graphic novels now comprise the fastest-growing sections of many bookstores – an accessible, vernacular art form with mass appeal. This hallmark exhibition explores the art and history of the graphic novel offering commentary and original works by the field's most celebrated historic and contemporary practitioners including Brian Fies, Marc Hempel, Mark Kalesniko, Peter Kuper, Lynd Ward, and many others.

Effective as of December 31st, 2006 Gerhard has parted ways with
Aardvark-Vanaheim and long time partner Dave Sim.

Dave is still in the process of gathering the funds necessary to buy
out Gerhard's 40% share of the company, but this will not affect the
publication of future Cerebus volumes or, presumably, Following
Cerebus (which is experiencing its own in-house delays at Win-Mill
Productions). In fact, the proofs are in for the fourth printing of
Form & Void and soon we will see the first Cerebus book *not*
printed by Preney Press.

As a result of the split, Gerhard will not be attending the SPACE
convention in Columbus, OH this year.

2006 LIBRARY OF THE YEAR TO DISPLAY COMIC ART BY GROUNDBREAKING
WRITER/ARTIST TEAM

________________________________________________________________

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Night Flight Comics is pleased to announce an
upcoming exhibition of over seventy original pages from the
groundbreaking independent comic book series, Cerebus. ‘Ye Bookes of
Cerebus: the Comic Art of Dave Sim and Gerhard’ officially opens on
Monday, August 21st 2006 at 9:00 a.m. Thirty-five of the original art
pieces will be on display at The City Library main branch lower urban
room, with the rest of the exhibit at both Night Flight Comics locations
and will remain on display through October 30, 2006. An artist’s
reading, Q&A, autograph session and gallery walk on Friday, October 27th
2006 starting at 1:00 p.m. At the event, Dave Sim will discuss the
Cerebus project, his massive 26-year long, 300-issue publishing history,
and the religious themes that make up the core of the exhibition.
Background artist Gerhard will also be discussing his work on the
series, the intricately detailed backgrounds that create the
extraordinarily realistic world in which the series takes place.

Cerebus was the longest running independent comic ever published. At six
thousand pages in length, it is the single longest graphic novel in the
comic book medium; arguably, the longest sustained narrative in human
history. Over seventy pages from this remarkable, and sometimes
controversial, work will be on display, focusing on many of the
religious themes that highlighted the later years of the book and
culminating with a dramatic and unique retelling of the Story of Creation.

The series began in December of 1977 as a parody of the popular Conan
the Barbarian comic. Sim quickly evolved as a writer and storyteller and
began to tackle larger themes such as politics, religion, gender
relations, and creator’s rights. At the same time, the artwork of Sim
and background artist Gerhard was consistently some of the best in the
medium and garnered numerous awards. Most recently, Sim and Gerhard won
the 2005 Shuster Award (named after Superman co-creator Joe Shuster) for
Best Canadian Achievement in Comics for the Cerebus project.

By the time the series ended in March 2004, Sim and Gerhard had worked
together for over two hundred issues of Cerebus, an unprecedented
achievement that more than doubled the one hundred issues of The
Fantastic Four created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the 1960s.

This exhibition is organized with curator for the Regina A. Quick Center
for the Arts, St. Bonaventure University Jason Trimmer and will feature
work from three of the sixteen books that make up the entirety of the
Cerebus series – Rick’s Story, Latter Days, and The Last Day. All of
these pages showcase one of the most unique properties of the comic
medium, which is its equal emphasis on words and pictures working
together. As writers and artists began to explore more mature subject
matter in comic books, starting in the mid-seventies, they also began to
explore the dynamics between how the words and pictures on a page
interact and affect the reader. For more than twenty years, Sim and
Gerhard have been among the preeminent innovators of this dynamic in the
comic book medium and the pages on display reflect several different
approaches they have taken.

Combining stylistic innovation, humor, and the revelations offered by
one man’s intensely personal spiritual journey, ‘Ye Bookes of Cerebus:
The Comic Art of Dave Sim and Gerhard’ promises to be a unique and
thought-provoking experience.

Admission to the exhibit areas are free and open to the public during
regular open hours. For more information, call Mimi Cruz 801.272.8343
